This process involves the death of retinal ganglion cell axons that make up the optic nerve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In simple words: Atrophy means irreversible deterioration leading to loss of function of the optic nerve: the organ that transmits information from the eyeball to the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order for the information received after the visual pathway from the outside world to be converted into a clear image, many processes are involved.
