What is acne?

Before dealing with the question of how to get rid of acne, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the essence of this disease. Acne (acne) is the result of changes in the hormonal background or improper functioning of the skin. If there is an inflammatory process in the body, it can affect the patient’s appearance. So, for example, gynecological and endocrine pathologies cause skin diseases, including acne. Gastrointestinal disorders (gastritis, cholecystitis, pancreatitis) are often accompanied by the appearance of acne on the face or body.

Thanks to the activity of sebaceous glands, the skin always remains moisturized. The secret protects the skin from the negative effects of the external environment – ultraviolet light, weathered, frostbite. But sometimes this protective system fails. Hair follicles are clogged with dead cells, as a result of which the gland becomes inflamed and blackheads appear on the skin.

Most often pimples appear on the face, neck, back or chest. At older ages, their appearance is associated with the endocrine system, gynecology, liver or gallbladder problems. Doctors also believe that certain factors can contribute to the appearance of acne. These can be hormonal changes during pregnancy and lactation, the beginning or discontinuation of birth control pills, the use of oily cosmetics.

In simple words, blackheads/pimples/acne is an inflammatory skin condition. Let’s take a closer look at all the causes of their appearance.

Why do pimples appear?

There is no single cause for the appearance of rashes. However, the appearance of pimples is related to the internal processes of the body. Our state of health is often reflected in the appearance of imperfections on the skin.

Hormonal Background.

Usually during puberty (puberty), overactive sebaceous glands begin to produce more sebum. This often leads to inflammation – acne;

When a person begins to live a sexual life in most cases, the problem of rashes goes away by itself. The main thing is not to get an infection while trying to get rid of a red pimple!

Menstruating women can also experience problems with acne.

Hereditary problem skin

Heredity is another factor that determines the development of acne on a hormonal level. If one or both of your parents had acne problems, you also have a high chance of facing the disease of acne.

Medicines.

Some medicines such as oral corticosteroids, birth control pills, and anticonvulsants may cause acne. This information should be listed as a side effect in the drug’s instructions.

Nutrition (food)

If a person has no complaints about the work of the gastrointestinal tract, nutrition slightly affects the appearance of acne. In the presence of pathologies of the stomach, liver, gallbladder or pancreas, acne appears with deviations from the diet.

Avoiding dairy products or a low glycemic index diet can reduce symptoms in people who are sensitive to them.

Abundant consumption of sweets and flour products also provokes an increase in acne, especially in the facial area.

Harmful habits.

Sweet carbonated drinks and alcohol significantly affect the appearance of facial rashes.

If there is no tradition of thoroughly cleansing the face before going to bed – this can also be attributed to bad habits. For problem skin (prone to rashes) it is very important to follow the rules of personal hygiene and do not forget about timely washing.

Demodecosis.

Demodecosis is a disease caused by the parasitization of a conditionally pathogenic mite (acne gland). Externally, it looks like inflammation of the skin with pustules. Usually drying pustules are covered with a purulent crust. To confirm demodex it is necessary to take special tests. Visually distinguish other pimples from those that have arisen due to a subcutaneous mite, it is very difficult.

What are acne like?

Patients do not always realize what type of acne they are dealing with. However, understanding this information is the first step in treating acne.

Infant acne.

The only type of rashes that do not need treatment. They appear as a reaction to maternal hormones. Over time, they go away on their own.

Comedones.

The most common rashes are comedones. They begin to appear during puberty. There are two subtypes of comedones: open and closed. The former are better known as “black dots”. They can reach the size of a match head and extend into the skin to a depth of up to a centimeter. Since the surface of the pores is not covered by a layer of skin, when they interact with air, bacteria oxidize. These chemical reactions are what cause the characteristic black color. Closed comedones are characterized by the fact that on their surface there is a thin layer of skin. Therefore, the contents of the pimple do not come into contact with the air and remain white.

Papules.

These are subcutaneous pimples. Small red rashes without characteristic white spots on them. Sometimes they can be painful and cause significant discomfort.

Pustules.

This type of pimple is better known as a “pustule”. They are a red inflamed area with a white rod in the middle. The contents of the pustules are purulent and almost always liquid.

Nodules

Hard subcutaneous nodules that protrude above the skin. Tends to turn dark red or purple in color. They can be itchy and very painful.

Kists.

Formed due to a large number of nodules that are under the skin and fuse together. Often result in scars or small depressions on the face.

Depending on the type and causes of rashes, the doctor selects the method of their treatment. This is usually a comprehensive approach that includes both external care and internal therapy.

Stages of acne

какие бывают прыщи

The choice of acne therapy technique depends on the severity of the disease. Cosmetologists distinguish four degrees of acne development:

  1. Light – small amount of black and white comedones, oily skin shine.
  2. Medium severity – up to 20 blackheads with a red inflammatory rash.
  3. Severe inflammation – accompanied by an oily sheen of the skin, deep, painful pimples up to 40 pieces.
  4. Severe form – painful nodules that transform into cysts.

An experienced doctor will be able to determine the stage of acne. This will require a face-to-face examination at cosmetologist-dermatologist. The doctor may prescribe additional tests and recommend a visit to other specialized specialists: gynecologist, gastroenterologist or endocrinologist.

Problem skin care: how to get rid of pimples on the face and body

Depending on the situation, the doctor may prescribe both antibiotics to relieve inflammation and hormones if the problem is a hormonal imbalance. Also, in addition to treatment, it will be necessary to establish a system of problematic skin care.

Key recommendations for treating acne at home:

  1. Wash your face or shower twice a day. Acne-prone skin is sensitive. Washing more than twice a day can irritate it, making the condition worse. For best results, dermatologists recommend washing your face when you wake up and when you go to bed.
  2. Use skin care products and non-comedogenic cosmetics. These products are specially labeled.

The packaging of cosmetics for problem skin may state:

  • won’t clog pores;
  • non-comedogenic;
  • non-acnegenic;
  • oil free.

Do not touch pimples with dirty hands or squeeze them out yourself. This seems like the quickest way to remove a pimple, but this approach can aggravate inflammation.

Special care and cleansing should be for the entire surface of the skin prone to rashes, not just the inflamed areas. This will help treat existing pimples and prevent new ones from appearing.

Wash all items that come into contact with your skin. These surfaces accumulate dead cells, bacteria, and dirt that can clog pores. For example, these problems occur with collars on clothing, bedding, or other items that fit tightly around the body.

Use a separate towel for your face. Change it regularly for a clean one if you want to cure acne without getting a recurrence of rashes.

What remedies help to get rid of acne at home?

Despite the many myths about the benefits of home treatment and folk medicine, such therapy is likely to either not help at all to cope with the problem, or to do harm. But some natural remedies such as zinc, tea tree oil are indeed added to cosmetics that prevent and help in the treatment of acne.
