In what cases, then, are male health disorders most likely to be noticed? First, symptoms often appear during urination or for some time afterwards. Secondly, any disorders begin to bother during sexual intercourse or after it. Third, any rashes on the penis, itching, burning or swelling should cause concern.

  • Frequent, long-lasting pain (penis or groin pain inside or outside)
  • Constant pulling or aching pain in the groin area

Women’s health, consultation with a urologist

Women are seen by “urogynecologists” or “urologists -gynecologists”. The following problems with the genitourinary system are quite common in women:

  • Cystitis
  • Bladder diseases
  • Infections, including STIs (sexually transmitted infections)
  • STDs (sexually transmitted diseases)

In addition to separating specializations by gender and age, there are additional referrals. Urologists are doctors who may treat in one or more additional  specialties.

Urology: treatment of urologic diseases, additional specializations by disease group are discussed below.Urology: treatment of urologic diseases, additional specializations by disease group are discussed below.

Kidney treatment

A urologist who treats kidneys (women, men, children)  –  is a nephrologist. A nephrologist treats without surgery, in cases where surgery is required, patients are referred to a urologist-surgeon.

Diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases (with a nephrologist):

  • Urolithiasis (kidney stones)
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Hydronephrosis
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • Renal failure

Oncology treatment

A urologist who treats oncologic diseases (in women, men, children) –  is a urologist – oncologist. This doctor performs treatment by conservative methods and surgically removes benign and malignant tumors and neoplasms in the urogenital system. This type of treatment is engaged only in highly specialized medical institutions to which our clinic does not belong.

Treatment of genitourinary tuberculosis

Tuberculosis often affects the ureter, kidneys, urethra, prostate, and bladder. Phthisiologists – urologists diagnose and treat this type of disease. It is treated only in state medical institutions.

Emergency care, including surgical care

Our clinic does not provide this type of service, however, we will tell you about them. Specialists urologists work in hospitals, polyclinics and clinics, with urgent and emergency medical care – these are urologist-surgeons. These doctors perform operations of different types and varying degrees of complexity:

  • Laser
  • endoscopic
  • transurethral
  • laparoscopic
  • retroperitoneal
  • cavity

Urologic surgeons are approached by patients with severe cases:

  • After genital trauma
  • For acute urinary retention (AUR)
  • In bleeding of the urinary organs
  • With organ developmental abnormalities
  • In advanced stages of certain genital diseases

It is recommended that men aged over 40 years should visit a urologist at least once a year for preventive examinations. Even if there are no symptoms to worry about – doctors advise to do an ultrasound of the prostate. By this age, the risk of developing urological diseases increases.

This does not mean that preventive examinations cannot be performed on younger men, quite the opposite. It is just that annual visits to a urologist until the age of 40 and older are recommended. Taking care of the state of intimate health is a useful habit. It helps you to find diseases in advance, the symptoms of which you have not noticed.

Urology: treatment of urological diseases  is an important topic that is not commonly discussed in our country. Many people are embarrassed to discuss genital health and wait for the symptoms to go away. Some go further and diagnose themselves and self-medicate, aggravating the disease, such is our mentality.

In Europe, it is customary for men to visit a urologist systematically from a young age. Europeans are not shy and are not afraid to see a specialist once in a while, as they care about their health. Therefore, they have higher health indicators and life expectancy than Ukrainians.

If women in most cases do not neglect to visit gynecologists once a year, the situation with men is worse. A minimum of once a year is recommended for men:

  • Preventive examination by a urologist
  • prostate ultrasound
  • PSA blood test (to diagnose prostate cancer)
  • Hormone testing
  • Diagnosis of venereal diseases, STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) and  STIs (sexually transmitted infections)

Additional tests and diagnostics are ordered if the doctor suspects the onset of the disease or if the tests are poor.

Urology treatment: how to consult a urologist

The examination and consultation of a urologist proceeds as follows. The doctor asks the patient (male or female) questions during the conversation:

  • What’s bothering you?
  • Frequency and intensity of symptoms?
  • How bothersome are the symptoms and impair quality of life?
  • How many times a day does urination occur?
  • Is there any pain, burning or itching and under what circumstances?
  • Have you noticed any discharge or foul odor?
  • Are you sexually active?
  • What were you sick with before?
  • Are there any chronic diseases?
  • How long ago were medications and drugs last taken?
  • Are you allergic to anything?
  • Is there any sensation that genital function has deteriorated?

How a urologist andrologist performs an exam for men

Much of the examination will depend on the information the doctor has received from the patient about their condition and complaints:

  1. Palpation of the lower back and lower abdomen. The doctor uses his fingers to feel the abdomen and lower back for lumps, swelling and pain. It is most often done lying down, rarely standing up.
  2. Visual inspection of the inguinal area and genitalia for: redness, rashes, swelling, growths, plaque and discharge, ulcers and other abnormalities.
  3. Ultrasound of the prostate gland (through the skin of the abdomen)/TRUSI (the transducer is inserted rectally) is performed if there is no pain in the anus, hemorrhoids or fissures.
  4. Ultrasound of the bladder (more often done through the abdominal skin). It allows you to assess the condition of the bladder, detect pathologies, foci of inflammation or neoplasms.
  5. Laboratory tests (blood, urine and smear tests). Infections, hormonal disorders, oncology or inflammatory processes can be detected in this way.
  6. Urologic tests (for infertility, potency or ejaculation problems). Diagnosis of pelvic circulation and other problems.

In the initial examination, the doctor performs all or part of these tests. Based on the results the urologist gets, additional tests may be done.

  1. Palpation of the lower back and lower abdomen. The doctor uses his fingers to feel the abdomen and lower back for lumps, swelling, and pain. It is often done while lying on a couch
  2. Visual inspection of the inguinal area and genitalia for: redness, rashes, swelling, growths, plaque and discharge, ulcers and other pathologies (conducted in the gynecological chair).
  3. Ultrasound of the bladder and kidneys (more often done through the abdominal skin). It allows you to assess the condition of the bladder, detect pathologies, foci of inflammation or neoplasms.
  4. Laboratory tests (blood, urine and smear tests). Infections, hormonal disorders, oncology or inflammatory processes can be detected in this way.

How to choose a clinic and doctor

More often, patients choose a clinic and a doctor based on reviews on the Internet. This is one of the easiest and fastest options. Pay attention to the following points:

  • It is good if the clinic has highly specialized doctors. If the clinic does not accept everyone, but deals with specific problems – very good! Good clinics explain to patients what diseases their specialists treat. This way, you will not waste time and money on an appointment that will not help you.
  • It is a good idea to make an appointment at a convenient time. Therapy may take some time and then several visits will be necessary. Check in advance with the clinic to find out the schedule of a particular doctor.
  • Length of the initial appointment and scope of services. An appointment of 30-40 minutes is considered optimal. During the initial consultation, the urologist should collect complete information about your condition and perform additional tests, examinations, ultrasound and necessary tests. More often than not, a primary diagnosis can be made on the first day and treatment or recommendations can be given.
  • Is it possible to make an appointment in advance? Some clinics accept appointments on a first-come, first-served basis and in such cases it is difficult to get to the doctor on time, you have to wait in queues for a long time.
  • Can I pay for my treatment in installments or can I take out a loan? Not every clinic allows installments.
  • What is included in the cost of treatment. You can pay for each service separately or you can pay for the whole course of treatment.
